Devil's Advocate: Video Girls (To be or not to be?)

So evidently everyone has something to say about video girls and everything they do. How they look, what they wear, how they dance and the money they make. Is it really that bad though? I mean seriously, I don’t hear anyone complaining about skinny supermodels making $10,000 to $20,000 a day walking the catwalk half naked. So I find it pretty contradicting when people have a problem with a healthy model – you know the kind with meat on her bones – making her money. It’s no secret that high fashion, editorial models are notorious for eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. You have NEVER heard of that sort of thing about a video model. In the hip hop world, the more the better. Just watch any Lil Wayne video and you’ll see what I mean.

Just like anything else, people quickly stereotype video models as hoes or groupies and that’s probably because of a promiscuous little character named Karrine Steffans. But EARTH to the WORLD…not every video model is Karrine. She was a special breed to say the least and that doesn’t mean that every single video model followed in her footsteps. If anything, they learned what not to do from her. Some of these girls are getting their degrees, supporting their families and using this platform as a stepping stone for a career in acting or dancing. If you would see them in normal everyday life you would think she was just another girl - probably a really pretty or ridiculously curvy girl but nonetheless normal – getting her money and paying her bills. Contrary to belief not everyone wants to date a rapper let alone sleep with one and I’m sure after doing a couple videos the hype of it probably gets old. I know some girls who are actresses and in school getting their Bachelor’s who model because it’s good money and has a more flexible schedule than a retail or corporate job. Therefore it makes it much easier to fit in classes or auditions or time for family. Some of them are mothers and found that they can make good enough money to put food on the table with a gig like this. People like watching these types of girls in videos and probably wouldn’t watch them as much or at all if it was just a mediocre looking rapper standing sans models with his even worse looking entourage spitting lines at the camera. At the end of the day, it’s a job and there are girls who do it very well.

So are video models the new standard or without standards as they’re labeled?

Some argue that at least these models aren’t stripping. Well if they were some of them would be making a lot more money and since they are already wearing next to nothing in these videos anyways, why not take it all off? I mean the way these girls are booty poppin, making it clap and shake it this way and that doesn’t really leave much to imagination. So why bother? If it’s all about the money and getting a lot of it then you might as well take off the very little you have on to double or triple the money you’re making.

Harsh? It is what it is.

“Stripping is degrading…how can she take her clothes off for money…blah…blah…blah…” It’s easy. The same way you get up every morning and do whatever it is you do for the man. Quite frankly the stripper who is taking her clothes off for an audience could very well be much more modest than the video girl who is trying to further her career by sexually advancing herself to an artist and/or director. So which one is worse? Having sex with a motive or undressing for your job? At least with stripping, your paycheck is guaranteed.

I kind of wish that all women would get together, take a stand and refuse to be in videos…at least not as degrading sexual objects. I can’t even be mad at the directors and artists for giving into “favors” and degrading the models because it is the women who are doing it to themselves. Really, no one is forcing video models to do what they are doing – at least not giving them a life or death ultimatum. It’s as if they are volunteering the degradation of themselves.

Now, I can’t sit up here and say that I don’t understand the issue a little bit. For some of these girls, this is the first time they’ve had the spotlight put on them and the new attention feels great. But sometimes it’s easy to get lost in all that and mistake the attention as your worth. And so when a woman thinks she’s only worth a video or an appearance in it, should someone be at fault when they treat her like that? I’m not saying it’s right or that all of these models act like this, but it’s not unheard of either.

Inevitably, no matter how much I write and regardless of me saying it over and over again like a broken record the truth remains the same: For every woman who is willing to stop, another is willing to go…

...HARD.

QOTD: Carrie Inspired (and a favorite Carrie outfit)

“Maybe our mistakes are what make our fate.”
Carrie Bradshaw

I totally agree yet disagree which officially makes me a Gemini :) I was thinking today about how incredibly happy I am. I have a job (it's not perfect but pays my bills), a roof over my head, clothes on my back, a loving family, awesome friends and a great man in my life. But I wondered had I not made the choices I made in my life including the wrong ones would I have ended up where I am today. I don't believe in mistakes but every choice we make and everything that happens occurs for a reason. It's our destiny, our fate. And so even if we make not so smart choices that put us with our backs against the wall and in the end we fulfill the purpose that God had for us in the first place, is our fate really a mistake?

Nonetheless, check out Ms. Bradshaw in this fabulous ensemble while filming the SATC movie.

Hello Lover!

So, because of Project Runway I've recently become a huge fan of Michael Kors and lately I've been appreciating him as a designer. Especially his shoes...

I was in Nordstrom's the other day and he had some great options for the summer so I decided to hit up his website. I came across these beauties. I've been looking for some cute open toe slide shoes and these are perfection! You can get the Michael Kors Croc-Embossed Slides for $119 (plus shipping if you order online). But aside from open toe shoes, platform and square-toed pumps are in full effect and I've got to get my hands on a few which brings us to the Michael Kors McClane Patent Pumps. They're platform at 4 1/2" which equals awesomeness! You can cop these for $139 and have everyone drooling at your feet.

The Good Life: T.I. Gives Wheelchair Charity A Hand

T.I. was doing good in New York the other day. He helped out in the Wheelchair Charity, visited the patients and staff. In fact, he's been doing a lot of good lately. Last week, he spoke to Chamblee High School in Atlanta and numerous other young people across the country. Now, inevitably I'm sure there are haters saying that he's only doing all that he's doing recently because he just got off of house arrest but you know what? If that's what it takes for him to do good then so be it. Some people get off of house arrest or get out of jail and don't give back whatsoever. And even sometimes they go and do the same thing they got locked up for. Change is instantaneous because it's a choice. I'm glad to see that Tip's choice is to grow from his past situation.

Black Politics: The Complexion Complex

Remember when light skinned guys used to be in? Nowadays, women are sweating Tyson Beckford, Tyrese, and Morris Chestnut leaving yellow brothers in the dust. Have light skinned girls ever been out? I mean look at Beyonce, Halle, and Tyra. I can’t remember when a dude didn’t swoon over any of them. At the end of the day, does it really matter though?

We all know that one dude who only dates light skinned girls. It’s so funny that even in 2007 the issue of “being light skin is better” is still at hand.

My former manager, who is a beautiful woman that happens to be dark skinned, clearly had a complexion complex. I say this because another gorgeous woman (who happened to be dark skinned also) walked into the store and my manager dished out, “You’re pretty for a dark skinned girl.”

Are you kidding me?

Now, as a black woman - regardless of the fact that I’m light skinned - what my manager said was offensive…to me. I mean what the hell was she implying? Had the girl been lighter, would she have automatically been considered “beautiful”? Or do you have to be extraordinarily attractive to be considered good looking if you’re dark?

I think as a race, we have been in some sort of debate such as this one at some point, but why is this even an issue? Both Kelly and Beyonce are fly, but I definitely think the media is much more likely to draw attention to the lighter one…and has adamantly. It’s sad, yet on the other hand, it’s no secret that the media is biased to what’s believed to be more attractive. However in real life, what’s the preference? Personally, I have dated an assortment of chocolate – light, dark, medium and once even some white but I’m honestly much more concerned with what’s inside. I don’t think it’s fair to only look at one shade of blackness as beautiful. That doesn’t make us any better than other races who are prejudice to us as black people.

Black folks, I ask you, how can we be racist against our own race? It’s a little backwards, don’t you think? It’s all absurd and getting to the point of disturbing. I know some girls who want to be with darker guys because they want to have brown babies. I heard about this one girl who was light skinned with good hair who only wanted to date and reproduce with a dude with the same complexion and hair. It’s believed that darker guys who only date light skin women do so to make up for their darkness, because they consider their own complexion as inadequate. So if they have the fine, yellow broad on their arm, they can be looked at as “good enough.” My cousin has a belief that all light skinned girls date ugly or average looking guys and I know some other folks who believe that all dark skinned people have perfect skin. It’s absolutely fascinating the bull that we will convince ourselves to be true to justify our narrow-mindedness. I absolutely hate it when someone judges me just because I’m light.

NEWS FLASH: good hair and genes are not determined by complexion. I have seen ridiculously good looking women who were dark and light – who had good hair, short hair, curly hair, light eyes, big butts, small ones, etc. I have gorgeous friends – all different shades, shapes, and sizes – and none of us have a preference…complexion wise. My best friend is so yellow she’s damn near translucent and her man is as dark as a shadow but they’re both insanely attractive and if they were to reproduce they would have beautiful brown babies. However, I know for a fact that’s not why they are together. If he’s a good man, good looking and good to me then it’s all good. The complexion politics seems like it will always exist just like normal racism. But maybe it isn’t pure ignorance, instead maybe it all depends on what a person knows. Maybe the dude we know who only dates light skinned girls had a light skinned mother and sister. And maybe the first girl he asked out was brown skinned but broke his heart shut him down. That’s still not a good enough reason, but granted I’m trying to find some type of legitimate loophole that will make sense of all this.

At the end of the day though, it’s all politics. Light skin, dark skin, it’s just skin and with the complexion complex some of us are developing we need to grow some thicker skin. So sure, these politics may always exist. But I think that there’s enough politicking going around – whether we’re light enough, dark enough or good enough – for us to be considered someone’s preference. That’s the beauty of politics.

There’s a party for all us to be covered.

FAVE: Disney Couture Mickey and Minnie Kissing tee

The fabulous being that is the Best Friend has really been digging Disney Couture lately – the jewelry and she even had me look for this shirt for her. Absolutely adorable. You can actually find it at Delia’s. Kidada Jones (daughter of Quincy Jones) is the mastermind behind Disney Couture.

“The line is every little (and big) girl's dream come true. This line has captured the hearts of Hollywood stars like Nicole Richie, who love the whimsy of these fairytale pieces.”

Pieces from the line including tees and jewelry range from $25 to $150+ featuring Mickey, Tinkerbell and more of your Disney favorites. The more I see from this line, the more I like. I’ve known of it for a while, but I’m just now paying attention. I guess it took Mickey kissing Minnie…seriously the cutest ever.

Speaking of Carrie...

I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS MOVIE! The fabulosity that is Carrie Bradshaw will be on the big screen on May 30 (you should know this by now unless you've been living under a rock) and it cannot come soon enough. That being said I'm thinking about featuring some Ms. Bradshaw's best ensembles...

...stay tuned.

The Big Picture

Sometime last week, the Boyfriend and I had a conversation about why we love and enjoy the people we have in our lives. It was very interesting because the people who were actually brought up in the conversation actually meant something. And it made me think, the people who were in my life and didn’t come up in that conversation may not need to be around in the first place. Today, I was reading about the new art technology where the art in your house changes according to your mood. It turns bright when you’re happy and dark when you’re down. I wondered how bright my picture would be if I had that. Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation we had because it was so genuine and made me appreciate the friends I have, especially the Best Friend. She contributes to the bright and colorful picture that is my life. You think about the fun times you’ve had and the things you’ve gone through together.

Ahhhh...Good times…

Not only that but she recognizes how fabulous I am and supports me even in the dumbest decisions I’ve made about relationships, money and life in general. I guess what I’m saying is reflect and think why you enjoy your friends…your support system. How beautiful would your picture be because of them? Carrie had Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha. I have the Best Friend. (…and her hair) And as far as I’m concerned she’s brilliant! (Just check out our picture.)

FAVE: Urban Outfitters "Progress" and "Obama for yo mama" T-Shirts

In honor of Obama whooping Hilary's butt (she knows she needs to go ahead and drop out) I saw this and had to share. There is a number of shirts that represent the support of Barack but this is one of the best ones. However, the "Obama for Yo Mama" wins my vote for the best Obama t-shirt EVER!!! You can find both of these at Urban Outfitters, a store that's ranking higher and higher each day in my book.

Yes I Can, YES WE CAN!

As you noticed, I started off my day a little annoyed with family but after an awesome bowl of cereal, a productive conference call and as the day progressed it got better. I got off early enough to still catch some sun and hang out with the Boyfriend. After a failed attempt at working out and having Chipotle for dinner, I came home and went over ...(cue dramatic music)...my budget. But after all was said and done, it's actually not as bad as I thought it would be. All I have to do is stick to it (like I said in yesterday's Six Simple Steps) and I will make it. In other news, I saw the ridiculousness that was Chris Brown's video to his song, "Take You Down." UNfrickinNECESSARY. Also, did we all know that Madonna was on 106 & Park last Friday? Yeah, apparently there's a lot of weird stuff going on. And if I'm not mistaken Obama won North Carolina, while Clinton took Indiana. Hey, but we still can...YES WE CAN! In random news, Chris Paul turned 23 today. Speaking of 23...

23 more days, oh wait...it's after midnight.

...22 more days.

Either or Neither: The Sunglasses Tee

So I was doing a little window web shopping and I came across this: Delia’s and Urban Outfitters are both selling the same Sunglasses tee but in different colors (purple and yellow). Preferably, being the girly girl I am, I’m feeling Delia’s version. That and it’s $8 cheaper. Which one are you feeling, either one or neither one?

Let's Get The Day Started!

How getting my day started bright and early is sooooo worth it!

Six Simple Steps: Fixing Your Credit

In today’s simple six steps I thought I would tackle on something that most people and myself could relate to: fixing your credit. I’ve already been taking monumental steps in cleaning up mine and then most importantly maintaining it. From school loans to one or two credit cards, a bill here and a bill there you can get yourself caught up in some financial nonsense. Now, I am not a financial connoisseur of any sort not do I have a degree or certificate in giving advice about money but instead I am a normal person trying to get my own ish together. I thought however I would share some info on the things I’ve learned along the way in my journey to reach monetary superiority.

1. STOP!!!! Chances are whatever you’ve been doing with your money you need to stop. Stop shopping excessively. Stop disrespecting yourself and your hard earned money. Stop ignoring the fact that you have issues with money! Stop and take a deep breath. Everything’s going to be all right.

2. FIND OUT WHAT’S GOING ON. Find out your credit score and learn your credit report. If I’m not mistaken your can get 2 free credit reports each year. Try sites like Credit Report or google “free credit reports” and you’ll find tons of sites that will give you FREE access to your credit report. (None of these sites should charge you anything. If they do, it’s a scam to get your money. They may ask for your credit card information to verify ID, but that’s it. You should receive your report seconds after you register with the site.)

3. CONTACT SOURCES. Once you do find out who you owe and how much you owe them, call them (or email in some cases) and set up a payment plan. A lot of the people you’ll speak to may try to get you to pay your entire balance in full or tell you that you have to make a ridiculous payment. FALSE! Truth be told, you’re not in the situation you’re in because you can afford to pay $200 a month on your credit card. Explain to them your situation (or don’t) and TELL them what you are going to pay. After all, it is your bill and your credit. Trust me when I say they are not going to turn away an payment as long as it’s reasonable. If you can only afford $25 a month to pay off a debt…so be it! Even if it takes you 18 months, get it done.

4. CREATE A BUDGET. Now that you’re on your way to the top paying off all your bills…you’ve got to come up with a plan to make sure you have the money to do it. So naturally, you’re going to have to cut some of your spending or get another job. (Because I’m sure going to the first one you already have just isn’t enough…) No need to over exert yourself with another place of employment. Reduce UNNECESSARY spending by not eating out a lot, shopping excessively and going out. Instantaneously, it may suck a little bit but in the long run it’ll be soooooo worth it. Trust me. Pay attention to every penny you make! Make sure your “living” bills are covered like rent, car note, insurance, cell phone, gas and groceries. Then put something on a debt whether it’s a credit card, school loan, etc. according to the payment plan you came up with your creditors. Put 10% aside for savings and then use the rest you have as an entertainment budget. (Soon enough you’ll realize that you don’t need to be entertained as often as you are now.)

5. SET A DEADLINE. What’s the point of making a goal if you don’t know when you’re supposed to reach it? When do you want to be debt free? 6 months from now? A year? Two years? Set a goal on your calendar and make sure it’s realistic. If you have $2000 debt to pay and you’re making $50 monthly payments, 6 months is not the goal for you.

6. STICK TO IT. There is no point of doing the following if you’re not going to stick to it. Be consistent and follow through. It’ll be hard in the beginning and actually it may be hard the whole way through but in the end it’ll PAY OFF and your debt will be paid off!

So that’s all I’ve got to say about that. Good luck. Oh, and you’re welcome.

24 Days!

So, I’m turning 24 in 24 days and I noticed that even though I am a generally happy person I’m not really doing what I need to do to be at my happiest. Working retail is not something I’m necessarily looking to turn into a career and as much as I love dance I wasn’t doing it nearly enough. And even though my parents want me to go back to school, I want to go back even more. That being said, I’ve come up with a plan to get the most out of my days by waking up earlier, working out and making a living off of the things I love to do. I know that isn’t what they teach growing up but I don’t plan following path. I’m making my own path and leaving a trail. Besides, we’re in a damn recession and self employment is the smart way to go, unlike retail. (I swear we’ve been in a recession for the last 20 years. I should’ve never gotten into retail in the first place.) Of course it’s easier said than done. Working for yourself takes a lot of discipline and you have to have the nerve to set your own schedule and actually follow it. Luckily, though I’ll soon be 24 and by then I should be able to handle it :)

Bopping my head to: “Going On” – Gnarls Barkley
